Laser-Focused on Savings: HB Humphries’ Solar Power Journey

Project overview
HB Humphries, a laser technology company based in Kettering, invested in a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system in a bid to reduce its reliance on grid electricity and lower operational costs in response to increasing energy prices. The return on investment (ROI) for solar energy proved highly attractive, offering the company a reliable way to manage electricity expenses and maintain competitive pricing.

The 145 kWp system, consisting of 382 solar panels, is expected to generate substantial savings, with a first-year reduction in energy costs of £28,915. Over a 20-year period, the project is projected to deliver a profit of £773,132 and offset 378 tonnes of CO₂, aligning with HB Humphries' goals for both cost savings and environmental responsibility.

Installation details
The solar panels were installed on HB Humphries’ commercial building, which features a metal trapezoidal roof. A K2 mounting system, designed for metal roofs, was used to securely fasten the panels. The installation process, completed in just two weeks, allowed the company to quickly transition to renewable energy without disrupting their operations.

Financial and environmental impact
With a short ROI period of three years, HB Humphries began seeing immediate financial benefits from the solar installation, saving nearly £29,000 in the first year alone. This long-term investment not only reduces operational costs but also minimises the company's environmental impact, aligning with a growing commitment to sustainability. Over 20 years, the system will save an estimated 378 tonnes of CO₂, making a significant contribution to the company’s carbon reduction efforts.
